Madison County Release Meaning
A release record answers a narrow but vital question: when and on what recorded basis did a custodian stop holding a person? That is not always the same as freedom in the community. Madison County Detention Center may record bond, a court-ordered release, completion of a local term, or a transfer. A transfer ends Madison County custody but begins custody with another agency. A court file answers a different question about charges, judgments, and case outcomes. North Carolina Department of Adult Correction history answers still another question about prison and supervision.
A name missing from a roster proves very little by itself. It does not identify the release time, bond type, receiving agency, or court result. It also cannot show whether the person entered state, federal, or immigration custody. For that reason, Madison County release verification should pair the detention record with the right follow-on source. The phrase released from physical custody is accurate when departure is proven. The word discharged should be reserved for a record showing that the correctional episode or sentence has ended.
Madison County Release Paths
District 35 court policy and state correctional records use terms that should not be blended. Bond releases occur before the criminal case is complete. A short local sentence may end through time served and lawful credit. A state-prison release can begin post-release supervision. Movement to another custodian is not a community release at all. The signed order and the jail record control the person-specific result.
| Recorded path | What it means | Where to verify next |
|---|---|---|
| Unsecured or secured bond | Physical release under court-set conditions while the case may remain pending | Sheriff release record and Madison County court file |
| Custody release | Release to a person or organization that accepted responsibility under the order | Signed release order and jail disposition |
| Time served | A local term or credited confinement has been completed | Judgment, jail credit, and actual release timestamp |
| State commitment | Madison custody ended through transfer to NCDAC | NCDAC Offender Public Information after admission |
| Other-agency transfer | A different jail, USMS, ICE, hospital, or custodian received the person | Receiving agency and transfer record |
- Discharge
- A documented end to a correctional episode or sentence, not just exit from a building.
- Detainer
- A request or basis for another authority to take custody.
- Post-release supervision
- Community supervision that follows release from a structured felony prison term.
- Expunction
- A court process that can remove qualifying records from public access under state law.
Madison County Release Record Fields
Madison County publishes no verified online release display with a fixed set of visible fields. The items below are defensible targets for a focused request, subject to the Sheriff's actual record structure, redaction, and disclosure decision. They should not be described as fields shown on a county website. Asking for a person and event by name and approximate date is more useful than requesting an undefined “release list.”
| Requested field | What it can show |
|---|---|
| Full name and booking number | Which detention episode the record concerns |
| Booking date and time | When Madison County custody was recorded |
| Release date and time | When the facility recorded departure |
| Release mechanism | Bond, court order, time served, or another disposition |
| Court and case number | The legal file tied to the custody event |
| Receiving agency | Whether another custodian accepted the person |
| Booking photograph | The intake image, if maintained and releasable |
Bond information does not prove dismissal or acquittal. “Time served” still needs judgment and credit context. A receiving-agency entry may be the most important field when a person disappeared from county custody. No local public retention period was verified, so Madison County release records must not be promised online for a set number of hours or days.
Note: Requested fields remain subject to the Sheriff’s actual record structure, legal review, redaction, and disclosure decision.
Request Madison County Release Records
The county public-records page and the Sheriff's written policy and request form provide the formal local route. The form asks for requester contact details, a full record description, known title, date or location, and the preferred delivery format. Inspection, email, photocopy, and other digital formats are offered. The policy does not accept a public-record request by phone, although a phone call can still be used for a current-custody question.
- Identify the person by full name, plus a booking number or approximate admission date when known.
- Ask for existing booking, release or transfer, bond, timestamp, receiving-agency, and photograph records needed for the event.
- Select inspection, email, paper, or another offered format. Small email attachments or download links have no duplication charge under the policy.
- Respond if the custodian asks for a narrower date range or clearer description. After-5 p.m. submissions are treated as received the next business day.
- If part is withheld, request the legal basis and all reasonably separable public portions.
The policy lists three cents for a single-sided letter page and five cents for a double-sided page. An email attachment up to 10 MB or a download link carries no duplication charge. Storage media is billed at market cost, and mailing adds postage. Extraordinary service can cost twenty dollars per hour in six-minute increments. If estimated costs exceed fifty dollars, the Sheriff may require a seventy-five percent deposit. The office typically acknowledges within two business days and normally follows up on a simple request within five, while completion still depends on scope, review, redaction, and workload.

That is the Sheriff's public contact and records address. It is not confirmed as the physical discharge door. In-person inspection is arranged by appointment, generally limited to two hours in a day, and responsive documents may be held for fourteen calendar days after notice.
North Carolina Release Record Law
North Carolina G.S. 132-6 governs inspection of public records, while state law also limits copy charges to authorized costs. Access remains subject to other laws. Criminal investigation material, juvenile records, sealed matters, confidential information, and expunged records may be withheld or redacted. The Sheriff need not create a new analysis to answer why someone was released. Ask for the existing disposition, signed release documentation, and timestamps instead.
Court disposition and jail departure are separate records. State expunction guidance explains the court process for qualifying matters. Waiting periods and eligibility turn on the record and can depend on the later of conviction or sentence and supervision completion. An absent court result is therefore not proof that no arrest or custody event occurred. Legal eligibility questions belong with the Clerk, counsel, or the state court system.
Note: The state releases search's visible year choices are an interface window, not a legal record-retention schedule.
Search Madison County Released Inmates
The correct search begins with the last known custodian. A county-only booking is checked through the Sheriff, NC SAVAN, and the Madison criminal case. A state-prison episode belongs in NCDAC systems. A federal case may require BOP, a federal docket, or USMS. An immigration transfer calls for a prompt ICE search. None of those systems is a universal list of Madison County released inmates.
- Call the Sheriff at 828-649-2721 to ask whether the person is currently held and whether another agency received them.
- Search the correct North Carolina custody agency in NC SAVAN and compare the name, identifier, and reporting agency.
- Use the written Sheriff request for the exact release or transfer record and recorded destination.
- Search the Madison County criminal case through eCourts or ask the Clerk for the judgment, disposition, or release order.
- Follow the record into NCDAC, BOP, ICE, USMS, or another jail only when the custody path supports it.
A blank result can come from spelling, an alias, a system delay, expunction, a juvenile restriction, a different county, or the wrong custody system. Record the identifiers and date range used. Then seek the source record. For a same-day window, the Madison County Jail Releases: 24 Hours page explains the local fallback without claiming that a feed exists.
NCDAC Madison Release Search
The NCDAC Offender Public Information search covers North Carolina correctional records. It is not a Madison County arrest index, and a person held only at the county jail may have no NCDAC record. For likely completed state cases, begin with “Inactive,” then broaden to “All.” Choose “Active Probationer/Parolee” when release from prison may have been followed by supervision.
| Search field | Use | Identity note |
|---|---|---|
| Offender number | Seven-digit state identifier | Strongest direct match when known |
| Last, first, middle initial | Name search with Sounds Like option | Compare more than the name |
| Birth date or age range | Narrows common names | Use permitted identifiers carefully |
| Status | Active inmate, active supervision, inactive, or all | Status and history must be read together |
| Race, gender, ethnic group | Additional filters supplied by the portal | Never rely on one descriptive field alone |
Read the matching detail in time order. A historical release row is evidence of an event. A future projected or tentative date is not. The separate NCDAC Inmate Releases search accepts county with year and month, or surname with Sounds Like. Its Madison selection identifies state release data associated with Madison, not people who bonded out of Madison County Detention Center.
The official NCDAC search screen shows the statewide status and identity filters.
Those filters help separate an inactive state record from an active inmate or active supervision record, but they do not replace Madison County jail records.
Note: County equals the reported state release county in this form, not the Madison County jail that released a person.
No Madison Release Feed
No official Madison County, North Carolina current roster, 24-hour release list, 72-hour release list, release archive, or booking gallery was located in the official channels reviewed. The Sheriff's page provides contact and public-record routes but no detention search. The absence should not be converted into an invented feed, cadence, or display-field list. Searches are also vulnerable to results from Madison counties in other states.
A named release record or a narrow date-bounded request is the defensible local fallback. Ask for the fields needed, including release time and receiving agency. NC SAVAN can add a custody-status event, and the court file can explain the signed release order. NCDAC's county and month search remains state-prison data, not a substitute three-day Madison jail feed.
The person may have bonded out, completed a term, or moved to another custodian. The release disposition identifies which event occurred.
Madison Release Supervision Search
North Carolina probation, parole, and post-release supervision are different. Probation is court-ordered community supervision and may be used without a prison term. Parole is mainly tied to older sentencing law and narrow exceptions. Post-release supervision follows release from a current structured felony prison sentence. An active supervision result means the person is outside prison under NCDAC control, not that every sentence has terminated.
Search OPI with “Active Probationer/Parolee,” inspect the supervision history, and use the current NCDAC office directory to confirm the assigned location. The newer official directory places Madison in Judicial District 24 and lists a Mars Hill office, while older government sheets list Marshall with conflicting phone details. Verify before visiting. The supervision record should identify the type and history before anyone treats physical release as final discharge.
Madison Post-Release Resource Map
The official Madison County resource directory maps social services, health services, transportation, the DMV, vocational rehabilitation, and regional providers. It does not identify a dedicated Madison reentry council. A person planning documentation, care, travel, or a supervision visit can use the directory as a starting point, but it is dated and each contact should be confirmed.
This distinction prevents a directory from being described as a release program it is not. The source can help with practical needs after custody, while the Sheriff, Clerk, NCDAC, and NC SAVAN remain the correct agencies for records, court outcomes, correctional status, and notifications.
Getting Home After Madison Release
The Madison County Transportation Authority describes advance-scheduled transportation, not a fixed jail route or on-demand discharge pickup. Registration and scheduling occur during weekday hours. Anyone considering that service should call 828-649-0729 in advance to confirm eligibility, pickup feasibility, timing, and fare.
No official source verified the physical release door, normal discharge time, family waiting rules, or a routine rideshare pickup point at Madison County Detention Center. Do not rely on the Medical Park Drive public contact as proof of the exit location. A ride plan should be confirmed directly with the facility and transportation provider before the expected event.
Note: Advance scheduling does not guarantee Madison County Transportation Authority service for a same-day jail discharge.
District 35 Madison Release Orders
Madison County belongs to District 35's five-county pretrial release policy, effective December 1, 2025. It distinguishes unsecured bond, custody release, secured bond, and secured bond with electronic house arrest. The policy also contains suggested schedules. Those schedules are not proof of what happened in one case.
The signed release order controls the amount, conditions, and authorized path. An unsecured bond is still a pending-case release under an obligation. Electronic house arrest means the person has left the jail but remains subject to location restrictions. A custody release refers to a person or organization accepting responsibility under the order and should not be confused with transfer to a correctional agency.
Madison Release Orders Moved
The Madison County Courthouse page says the historic courthouse at 2 N. Main Street is closed until further notice. Clerk services and criminal court sessions are temporarily at 258 Carolina Lane. The page contains a slight conflict about opening time, so confirm current access before traveling.
This temporary move matters when seeking a judgment, signed release order, or certified disposition. Portal Smart Search can provide public summaries, events, and a register of actions, while the Clerk supplies counter access and certified records. Court material may explain the legal basis for release but may not contain the minute-by-minute jail exit time. Pair it with the Sheriff record.
Madison Release Alerts and Federal Records
VINELink provides the NC SAVAN custody-notification layer for participating county and state records. Search one person, verify whether Madison County Sheriff or NCDAC supplied the result, and treat an alert as a status update rather than a certified release document. “Released” from Madison may coexist with later NCDAC custody. A state release with supervision may coexist with an active OPI supervision row.
The BOP inmate locator covers sentenced federal prisoners and certain histories after 1982. A “Released” result means no longer in BOP custody, not necessarily free of every custody or supervision. Many federal pretrial detainees are better traced through the federal docket and a focused USMS FOIA request. These federal sources should be used only when the case and custody history support them.
Madison Releases and ICE Transfers
An immigration detainer can turn a Madison jail exit into an ICE transfer rather than community release. Ask the Sheriff for the receiving agency and transfer disposition. Then use the ICE Online Detainee Locator promptly. ICE says its locator covers current adult detainees and people released from ICE custody within sixty days. An A-number, padded with leading zeroes to nine digits, and country of birth can improve the search when known.
An ICE result documents ICE custody status only. It does not resolve the criminal case, immigration case, or custody held by another sovereign. Likewise, an ICE release does not end immigration proceedings. When more than sixty days have passed, a blank locator result cannot confirm the older event. Use the appropriate ICE records and case channels while keeping the Madison and ICE events separate.
Note: An ICE custody change and a Madison County jail release are separate events with separate source records.
Madison Jail Fire Transfer Lesson
Madison County's 2022 electrical fire offers a local test of the release rule. According to the report on the jail evacuation and reopening, every inmate was moved to other facilities after the March 6 fire and transferred back after the jail reopened March 18.
Someone checking only the Madison building during that period could have mistaken transfer for community release. The event shows why a release inquiry needs two questions: did Madison County custody end, and which agency received the person? The receiving-agency field preserves the answer even when a roster view does not.
Madison Released Versus In Custody
Each source has a defined population. Using it outside that scope creates false negatives and false conclusions. The comparison below keeps a county release, a state discharge, and a federal or immigration event in their proper systems.
| Question | Primary source | What the result proves |
|---|---|---|
| Held now by Madison County? | Sheriff current-status call | Present county custody or a possible transfer lead |
| How did Madison custody end? | Sheriff release or transfer record | Recorded time, path, and destination if maintained |
| Released from state prison? | NCDAC OPI and Inmate Releases | State incarceration history and actual release entry |
| Still on state supervision? | OPI Active Probationer/Parolee | Active correctional supervision outside prison |
| Released from BOP or ICE? | Agency-specific locator | Departure from that named federal custodian only |
Note: A projected date forecasts a possible event; only a later actual history or source record confirms that release occurred.
Madison County Detention Facility
The facility map identifies one current local detention facility: Madison County Detention Center, also commonly called Madison County Jail. The Madison County Sheriff's Office operates the detention function. No separate municipal jail, state prison, federal prison, or ICE detention center in Madison County was verified from the reviewed official sources.
A bond, court order, or completed county sentence may return a person to the community. Transfer to NCDAC, another county, USMS, ICE, a hospital, or another custodian ends the Madison jail stay without proving freedom. Facility records and the receiving agency should be checked in sequence.
